As of late it has become pretty apparent to me that I’m a ‘hat girl’. Hats are the perfect accessory to elevate your outfit, regardless of the style you are going for, and a good hat can be so versatile. The super bonus to hats? They are amazing for disguising bad hair days!
I purchased my County Line hat from Goorin Bros. about a year ago and haven’t stopped wearing it since. Whether I am going for an elegant or edgy look, I love what this hat adds to an outfit. You can see it in past blog posts here, here and here and countless times on my Instagram page. Last week I was invited to visit the Toronto Goorin Bros. store to learn a bit more about the shop and select a new hat to add to my collection.
When you step into Goorin Bros. hat shop it is like taking a step back in time. Swing music fills the store and old nostalgic items such as hat boxes, gramophones, and crystal cut decanters decorate the shelves.
Jessica, the shopkeeper and a milliner, showed me around the shop and gave me a bit of background on Goorin Bros., and enlightened me on hat making in general. Goorin Bros. has been a family run business since it got its start in 1895 (you know how I love a good family business story!). There are shops all across the United States but we are lucky in Toronto to have 1 of only 2 Goorin Bros. locations that offers in-house customization services.
I’m always drawn to the felt hats – the quality and craftsmanship of each of these pieces is beautiful. I had always been curious about the seasonality of felt hats. Felt hats are generally seen as 3 season hats- fall, winter, and spring, but I have definitely been known to wear mine on summer nights.
An ‘accessory bar’ where you can choose feathers or pins to embellish your hat
I tried on countless hats in the shop before deciding on the Goodman hat. I love the finished edge, the satin ribbon, and the beautiful blue grey colour. I am positive it is going to be a staple in my wardrobe, just like my County Line hat. I didn’t wait long before taking my hat on a Sunday stroll to my local coffee shop.
Thank you to Goorin Bros. for partnering on this post and having me into their Toronto shop. The Toronto hat shop is located at 320 Queen Street West (Queen St. & Spadina Ave.) and all styles are available online.
