Apple dumplings are individual desserts where an apple is peeled and cored and wrapped with a delicious pie pastry. Drizzle with brown sugar and butter and you have got one of the most delicious fall desserts!

Course: Dessert
Servings: 6
Ingredients
  • 1 double pie crust (pre made or made to your recipe preference)
Apple Filling
  • 6 fresh apples
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 pinch cinnamon for each apple
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
Simple Sauce
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/4 cup butter
Instructions
  1. Select your apples. Peel them and remove the core. Tools such as an apple peeler and apple corer will help this first step immensely! (Not that I have either, heh!)

  2. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Prep your baking dish by lightly greasing the bottom with butter. I used a 9"x9" loaf dish.

  3. Roll out your pie crust on a clean surface dusted with flour. Cut the dough into 6 squares, one for each apple. The squares will need to be approximately 4.5"x4.5" to cover your apples completely. Place an apple in the centre of the pre-cut dough square and prepare the apples one by one.

  4. Place some of the butter and sugar into the removed core of the apple. Sprinkle the apple generously with cinnamon. When the apple is prepped with butter, sugar, and cinnamon, pull the 4 corners of your pie dough up to the top of the apple and pinch them together so that the dough surrounds the apple. Close the sides of the dough as well by pinching the remaining dough together. If the dough doesn't wrap perfectly around the apple that is totally fine! The goal is to just cover your apple with the pie dough as best you can. Aesthetics won't matter in the end :)

  5. Repeat this with all 6 apples and place them in the prepared dish.

  6. Next, prep the sugar sauce. In a small pot on the stove, bring the brown sugar, butter, and water to a simmer and allow to simmer for about 5-10 minutes until the mixture has thickened and there is no more granular sugar.

  7. Carefully pour the hot mixture over top of the apples in the dish. They will now be swimming in a sugary mixture and trust me, they are becoming all the more delicious for it!

  8. Place the dish into the oven and allow to bake until the dough has browned slightly all around. This took me about 40-50 minutes.

  9. Remove from the oven and allow to cool. Serve and enjoy!
