Last week I walked into my small town thrift store and immediately spotted this heart shaped donut pan. It is my favourite recent thrift store find…FOR SURE. I was then itching to bake some heart shaped donuts and with my sister having her friends and their families over for an afternoon of skating it was the perfect time.
I have made baked donuts many times (check out our peanut butter and jelly donuts or pumpkin spice donuts if you’re looking for a unique treat!) and they always turn out so well. I truly think that baked donuts are one of the easiest desserts to bake – every batch I have ever made has been a success (and honestly, that’s saying a lot with my baking track record). Considering that a dessert like donuts looks so pretty and has such a hype around them you would think that they would be complicated to make, so if you’re feeling a bit nervous about trying out this seemingly complicated dessert, I totally get it (baking is one of the few things that can still make me nervous!) but I definitely encourage you to give them a try!
With Valentine’s Day around the corner doing an ombre spread of pink icing and various types of sprinkles on these baked donuts just felt right! And seriously, the display was a crowd pleaser (that’s the goal here, right?!). It might be difficult to find a heart shaped donut pan (I truly did luck out big time) but regular circular donut pans are readily available (I purchased mine at Canadian Tire). Honestly, when dipped in pink icing and covered in sprinkles, a circular donut is definitely just as cute 🙂
I adapted this baked donut recipe from As Easy As Apple Pie. My recipe here is for 18 donuts but if you are looking to make a single pan, I definitely suggest following her recipe which is for 6 donuts to avoid any waste!
Preheat your oven to 400 and grease a donut pan.
First, prepare your donut batter. To do this, combine the wet ingredients in one bowl and the dry ingredients in another. In the dry bowl you will have your flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. In the wet ingredient bowl you will have your butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and milk. Whisk the wet and dry bowls separately and then add your wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and whisk until the mixture is completely combined with no clumps.
Pour your batter into a piping bag or a ziplock bag and cut off the corner to make your own piping bag. Slowly pipe your mixture into the donut tray. Do not over fill your pan because the mixture will slightly rise
Bake your donuts in the oven for 10 minutes. Watch carefully as donuts bake very very quickly compared to other desserts! They always catch me off guard with being complete much sooner than you would like.
Remove from your donut tray and allow to cool before decorating.
Combine your icing ingredients in a bowl and stir until smooth. If you feel your mixture could be a bit more liquid then add extra milk one tablespoon at a time.
Once your donuts are cool it is time to glaze them! To glaze the top of your donut, simply dip the donut flat into the icing bowl and remove it allowing excess to drip off the top before turning the donut upright. Add sprinkles when your icing is still wet!
To make your donuts with varying shades of pink icing, start first by adding the tiniest bit of red food colouring to your bowl of icing and dip as many donuts as you would like in that particular shade. Then add a tiny bit more red colouring to the bowl with each donut to get a deeper shade of pink for the icing. Once you have added the colouring you cant go backwards...so be sure to do all the lighter donuts you would like before adding in any more colour! Decorate each donut differently and have fun with it!
