We are getting in the spring spirit today and sharing some brunch ideas and inspiration for an elegant brunch table setting!
I can’t believe it is almost the end of April now! Spring has just finally started to peek her head and as I write this I can hear the first birds chirping and we are enjoying our third sunny day in a row! With spring and summer comes more entertaining (for me, anyway). While I love to have friends over and hang with them outside, it isn’t quite that warm yet. So I took it on myself to bring some spring indoors over the weekend in the best way that I know how – with flowers! I set up a spring brunch table setting and whipped up an easy brunch.
I’ve never been one to enjoy going out for brunch (I know, shocking!) but eating in and having friends over is my fave. A light cocktail, a meal that’s a perfect combo of savory and sweet, and an opportunity to make a lovely brunch table setting. When I look at it that way, what’s not to like about brunch?!
Putting together a brunch table setting doesn’t have to be complicated and it doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg either. I’ve teamed up with E.D.SMITH to inspire you to host an elegant spring brunch too. Growing up in the Niagara Region, E.D.SMITH jams and spreads were a staple in my family fridge. I remember passing their processing facility on my way to riding lessons and being almost star struck at the fact that this big company that I saw in the grocery store was made so close to my home. Now, 20 years later, I still always have a jar of E.D.SMITH in my fridge – it’s a must in my morning yogurt parfaits!
I used the E.D.SMITH Triple Fruit Spreads to make some delicious ricotta toasts for our brunch. Today I’m sharing 3 unique and delicious ricotta toast recipes as well as my best tips and tricks for putting together a brunch table setting. These tips would work for a family get together, a baby or bridal shower, and most definitely for a brunch!
The feel is kind of like the theme for your table setting. Keep it broad! Think of words like: rustic, modern or playful as opposed to terms like bridal shower, baby shower, or first birthday. Focusing on the latter options can lead to a design that is a little too kitschy and cute. Focus on how you want that bridal shower, baby shower, or first birthday party to feel.
Choosing this overall thematic word is helpful in selecting each of the elements for your table setting. For me, my theme word was spring. So for each element I added to the table I asked myself, ‘Does this item feel springy?’. My answer was always yes. Terracotta pots that signify starting seeds for the garden, checkered napkins for the start of picnic season, and bright colours and seasonal flowers that signify new plant life coming up outside.
Keeping a minimal material and colour palette is key to creating an elegant brunch table setting. For colours I focused on yellow and blue and for the materials I used terracotta, wood, and glass. I repeated these materials and colours throughout the whole table setting for a streamlined result.
If you aren’t a florist there are still lots of ways you can create beautiful centrepieces that don’t require traditional floral arrangements. Potted plants, like the daffodils I used, are a super easy way to decorate. Send the potted flowers home with guests and they can plant them in their garden once they are finished enjoying them indoors. In the summer, I’ve done similar table settings using fresh herbs or potted seedlings. Another simple but impactful centrepiece for a brunch table setting could be a collection of bud vases filled with flowers lined up and down the table. Or, how about greenery laid down the centre of the table like a garland (even greenery cut from your own garden and trees!)? Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and go for it!
I always love leaving a personal item at each place setting. Each Guest feels thought of and the table looks truly complete. These small bunches of blue muscari tied with a yellow velvet ribbon were the perfect little favour (and of course on theme/colour scheme!).
Sandwiches, personal pizzas, salad bar, toasts…there are so many fun DIY brunch ideas! Prep all of the necessary ingredients and set them out for your guests to put together their own dish. This way, you don’t have to spend a ton of time making food before hand and everyone gets to make their dish just the way they like it. To boot, it’s a fun activity to ‘cook’ together!
Prepping a pitcher of a drink before your guests arrive allows you to have something ready to give them right when they arrive and also eliminates any waste at the end of the afternoon. While flexibility with food is great, providing your guests with flexibility when it comes to alcohol (especially with a small group), will wind you up with a couple of half finished bottles of wine and more leftover juice than you can consume! Mimosas, caesars, and sangria are all great pitcher cocktail options. Make sure you have one non-alcoholic drink option too for Guests that would rather not drink.
A few years ago I tried my first jam and ricotta toast at a cafe in Montreal. Who knew such a combo could be so darn good?! Since then it has been a staple at my brunches. Guests always LOVE the concept and it is fun to play around with flavour combinations. Using the E.D.SMITH Triple Fruit spreads, I set about to make a few new and tasty toast combos. The Triple Fruit line from E.D.SMITH is one of my favourites – it is packed with unique fruit filled combos like apricots, passion fruit, and peach or strawberry with raspberries and plum. YUM! Here are 3 of my favourite Ricotta + Jam Toast flavour combos.
A simple brunch option! Ricotta + Jam Toast balances savoury and sweet and can be customized to suit many flavour palettes!
Combine the container of ricotta with the heavy cream and a pinch of salt. Using a whisk combine until the mixture is creamy.
Slice your bread and toast if that is your preference.
Add approximately 3 tbsp of the whipped ricotta as a base on your toast.
Add 2-3 tbsp of your E.D.SMITH Triple Fruits spread on top of your ricotta
Garnish your ricotta and jam with fruit, granola, coconut, flakes, fresh herbs etc....whatever suits your tastebuds! I have included 3 of my favourite flavour combinations below. Have fun trying new ingredients together!
